Producer of Bebo Valdés, Diego El Cigala, Paco de Lucía, Niño Josele, Concha Buika and Enrique Morente, among others, Madrid native Javier Limón also is a talented guitarist, singer-songwriter, arranger and composer. With Mujeres de Agua he showcases a dozen female singers to be reckoned with from around the Mediterranean, in performances that blend a flamenco sensibility with strains from Portugal, Greece, Turkey and the Levant. Of the ten Limón originals, Aynur's "Amanecer en Estambul" features the evocative Turkish clarinet of Hüsnü Senlendiriçi, alluding to the historic Sephardic connection between the two nations. Yasmin Levy makes this linkage explicit with her interpretation of the traditional Ladino tune "Komo el pasharo ke bola." With Eleftheria Arvanitaki's "Milo mou kai mandarini," Limón finds kinship between Greek folk traditions and the flamenco sound. A Limón arrangement based on a Lebanese-Iraqi folk song, "El beso libanés" is a love lament by Montse Cortés. "Oro santo," co-penned with Limón, is a pensive vehicle for Buika, who along with Estrella Morente (heard here as well on "Manuela") is one of the most exciting Spanish singers today. Given the project's scope, covering the Mediterranean waterfront may be asking a lot, but if Limón is contemplating Volume Two, one can only hope for the addition of comparable voices from Italy, Israel, Palestine and North Africa.

One consequence of the revolution of 1848 was the expatriation of progressive Germans to the New World, which took many revolutionaries to the Central Texas Hill Country and surrounding areas. Living in Central Texas today, it is still possible to find elderly speakers of an antiquated German in towns like Fredericksburg, New Ulm, Utopia, New Braunfels, San Antonio, Shiner (home of Shiner Bock beer, a Texas Brauhaus staple) and forgotten villages like Sisterdale, founded as a commune and frequented by Karl Marx's sister, among other progressive German intellectuals and adventurers. Living alongside Czech, Polish, Moravian and Bohemian expats with whom they discovered a certain musical and cultural affinity, the Germans sided with the Union and abolitionists among them helped escaped slaved make their way to freedom, for which dozens of German draft resisters paid dearly at Confederate hands in the 1862 Nueces massacre. The language was successively repressed in the wake of the World Wars, but some descendants proudly study high German in school today, and a sociolinguist at the University of Texas has been documenting Texas German dialects for some time.

Producer and enthusiast Thomas Meinecke first discovered the musical and linguistic traces of this migration in the early 1990s, and he returned to Texas in 2007 with director Peter Schubert to make Krasna Amerika ("beautiful America," produced for Bavarian TV) and the musical tribute of Texas Bohemia Revisited, a superb CD-DVD set with 23 audio tracks, the documentary and notes in German and English. There is a certain melancholy to Meinecke and Schubert’s extended road trip: patently, their interviews are with the last generation of Texas German speakers. The accordion and brass band music, on the other hand, shows promise of persisting, not least because of a fruitful, ongoing interplay with the vibrant Texas conjunto sound. It is still possible to ferret out live German-Czech music today, and Meinecke serves up the best of the Joe Patek Orchestra, the Shiner Hobo Band, the Praha Brothers and many others, in an essential package destined to become a classic of the genre, in a soulful portrait of an important cultural moment of German-Texan history. (One minor caveat: with its mixed English and German dialogue, the documentary lacks subtitles, making a passing knowledge of German helpful to English-speaking viewers.)

One need not see director Lavinia Currier’s film Oka! to appreciate the music of the semi-nomadic Bayaka of the dwindling Central African rainforest, animating the soundtrack to the lightly fictionalized portrayal of New Jersey born ethnomusicologist Louis Sarno’s long-term residency among this endangered people. The brilliant mimetic quality of Bayaka music reflects how closely they identify with their natural environment, appropriating and stylizing the auditory nuances of its sensory stimuli, abundant for those with ears to hear. A refined sense of acoustic ecology weaves the human voice in ensemble with the ambient soundscape of the Bayaka home environment to convey a profound sense of their essential spirituality, as well as their anarchic spirit of cultural resistance in a Central African society relentlessly intent upon Bayaka subordination. The human sensibilities finding voice here reflect an attentiveness to the natural world that has sustained Bayaka life in the rainforest milieu since long before the advent of recording technology and the predatory incursions of the European colonial adventure.

To further complicate the elusive, multifaceted layers of human meaning manifest here, the actual field recordings coursing through this soundtrack were logged not by Sarno but by producer-musician Chris Berry, who plays along and mixes raw field recordings with ambient sounds and restrained instrumental ornamentation (flute, sax, guitar, bass, percussion). Berry does this without undercutting the essential vocal character of the remarkable Bayaka oeuvre. Hearing from afar, in this mediated postmodern world of ours, our perceptions of Bayaka musical culture need not succumb to facile arguments about recording authenticity, the anxious construct of a global North imperially nostalgic about the very things its rapacious way of life is dead on course to destroy. Better to discover a Charles Mingus precursor in the earth-bow sound of "Molimo," hear transatlantic echoes of Alan Lomax’s “ephing” recordings from the backwoods 1940s U.S. south in "Elanda" or "Woodpecker," or wonder at the organic percussive quality of an ensemble of cupped female hands drumming on standing water heard in "Water Drum." If an acoustic revelation leads you to reflect upon the Bayaka elegy, their voices shall not have been raised in vain.

From a long line of hereditary musicians, granddaughter of the master Griot Amadu Bansang Jobarteh, and cousin of celebrated kora maestro Toumani Diabaté, Sona Jobarteh is the first Malian female kora virtuoso. Trained in cello, piano and harpsichord at the Royal College of Music, she went on to study composition at the Purcell School of Music. She also is a singer, producer, film composer and multi-instrumentalist. Jobarteh recently completed the score to Motherland, the pan-African documentary. With West African guest artists including Juldeh Camara, Babacar Dieng, Sankung Jobarteh, Baba Gallé Kante, Surahata Susso and Femi Temowo, Fasiya, her new album, is slated for released on 16 June 2011. She teaches kora in London.

The vexed cultural encounter between Spanish, English, indigenous and African-descent peoples in Caribbean Central America is perhaps most dramatically embodied in the history of the African-Amerindian Garifuna of coastal Honduras, Guatemala and Belize. In partnership with producer Ivan Duran, Andy Palacio, the Belizean Garifuna artist had just begun to reach world audiences when his unexpected passing in January 2008 dealt a severe blow to Garifuna music. Honduran Garifuna singer-songwriter Aurelio Martinez, Palacio's immensely talented understudy and frequent collaborator, inherited the mantle, and just a month later, began recording Laru Beya. Three years in the making, Laru Beya shows considerable musical evolution, and is a worthy follow up to Aurelio's Garifuna Soul (2004). As a composer, Curaçao native Jan Gerard Palm (1831-1905) ranks with Hubert de Blanck (1856-1932), the "Cuban Dutchman"; Ignacio Cervantes (1847-1905), Manuel Saumell (1818-1870) and José White Lafitte (1836-1918), all from Cuba; Puerto Rico's Juan Morel Campos (1857-1896); Joseph Boulogne, le Chevalier de Saint-George (1739-1799), the "Black Mozart" of Guadeloupe; and Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869) of New Orleans. Recognized as leaders in establishing nationally unique salon-classical music traditions, these composers all were influenced by African-Caribbean musical forms, were cognizant of the work of their contemporaries, and in some cases were personally acquainted. From 2006 to 2010, singer-songwriter Aurelio Martinez served in the Honduran Congress, where he championed the concerns of the Garifuna—a marginalized community descended from African escaped from slavery and Carib Amerindians in the Eastern Caribbean. But Aurelio has turned back to music full-time, and with his band Garifuna Soul, and Senegalese guests including Youssou N'Dour, he has a new album called Laru Beya. Read a review at RootsWorld.

Artistry and exile often run together, and exile has always had a way of making music "world." During the Iraq-Iran war, conservatory trained oud master Rahim AlHaj set "Why?" - the poetic lament of a friend - to music, and earned himself a couple of years in one of Saddam's prisons before being expelled, minus his instruments. Now based in Albuquerque, where, like all itinerant artists, AlHaj soon made new alliances, he tours and records widely, and has garnered multiple Grammy nominations. Many the recording project alludes to the continuing cultural resonance between Cuba and West Africa, but AfroCubism is possibly among the longest in coming to fruition. Fans have heard the tale: a bureaucratically foiled 1997 effort to bring electric guitarist Djelimady Tounkara and ngoni player Bassekou Kouyate from Mali to record in Cuba produced instead the quickly improvised, massively successful artistic and commercial wonder the world embraced as the Buena Vista Social Club. From the first suggestive Roy Orbison growl to the last Sponge Bob Hawaiian guitar strains of this remarkable totem of audio kitsch, Slovenian singer-songwriter Magnifico (aka Robert Pešut) has a stage name to match a pastiche persona whose insouciant excesses allude simultaneously to Liberace, Madonna, Borat, Duane Eddy, Ennio Morricone, Clint Eastwood and then some. To put it differently—with an edgy Balkan energy that feels as if it might erupt in heedless violence at any moment—Magnification is an apocalyptic, take-no-prisoners redux of (to borrow from Morricone) once upon a time in the (capital "W") west, Magnifico's pointed critique of a prevailing global pop sensibility of hatred, homophobia, sexism, racism and genocide. Italy and the Balkan world have embraced the singer since the early 1990s, and now it's time for the rest of us.
